Goodbye Walmart: this is the famous chain opening new stores in the U.S.

The chain that challenges Walmart in prices and quality announces major moves in different regions of the country

In recent years, the retail landscape in the United States has undergone significant changes. New chains are gaining ground and attracting the interest of consumers who seek quality and competitive prices. Competition with major giants like Walmart is intensifying, although not always with the most desired names.

A supermarket chain much loved by its customers has announced the opening of five new stores in different states across the country. This is Wegmans, a company that has experienced remarkable growth and now seeks to strengthen its presence in key regions. This expansion represents a strong bet to broaden its footprint and compete directly with market leaders.

Wegmans grows steadily on the U.S. map

Wegmans currently has about 112 stores distributed across eight states: Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Since it opened its 100th store in 2019, the company has kept a steady pace of openings, expanding its operations in areas where demand for its offerings is high.

So far in 2025, Wegmans opened a location in Lake Grove, New York, on February 26, according to The Sun. This has only been the starting point for more openings in the coming months. On June 25, its ninth store in Maryland will open in Rockville, with a space of 80,000 sq. ft. (7,432 m²).

In addition, Wegmans will make its debut in Connecticut with a store in Norwalk that will occupy 92,000 sq. ft. (8,547 m²), marking a milestone for the company. In 2026, the expansion will continue with new openings in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, although the exact dates for these last ones have not yet been announced.

Expectations, employment, and commitment to the community

Wegmans's arrival in new cities has caused great excitement among residents. Dan Aken, vice president of real estate and store planning, mentioned that Pittsburgh has been one of the most demanded regions by customers for more than 30 years. "We have received thousands of requests to open in Pittsburgh since we opened our first store in Pennsylvania," Aken explained.

On social media, many users have praised Wegmans's quality and prices, even comparing it favorably to Walmart. One comment said: "That moment when you discover Wegmans can be cheaper than Walmart." This kind of reaction reflects the strong connection the brand has achieved with its consumers.

Each new store will create between 400 and 500 jobs for the local community, which represents a positive impact on the regional economy. Wegmans's CEO, Colleen Wegman, emphasized the importance of keeping a close relationship with its employees and stores. "Our goal is to visit each store at least once a year because we want a personal relationship with management," she said.
