Say goodbye: the famous chain that announced massive closures in all America
A well-known retail chain with a historic presence in America announces the closure of numerous physical stores
In recent years, many businesses in America have closed their doors without much fanfare. Sometimes these are small family businesses that had been serving their clientele for decades. Although these losses affect entire communities, they are no longer as surprising as they once were.
What does have an impact is when a large chain, with hundreds of stores and years of history, announces its total closure. This is the case of the iconic Hudson's Bay, which has just confirmed that it will permanently close all its stores in Canada. The news has caused surprise and disappointment among thousands of loyal customers who saw this chain as a benchmark of traditional retail.

The Farewell of a Historic Giant
Hudson's Bay, one of the companies oldest in North America, has confirmed that it will close all its stores. Founded in 1670, it began as a company dedicated exclusively to the fur trade in Canadian territory and played a key role in the colonization of the region. Over time, it evolved into a major department store chain offering everything from clothing to home goods.
Despite its long history and having adapted to different markets, Hudson's Bay hasn't been able to overcome the current economic difficulties. The company, which also manages branches such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Saks OFF 5TH in Canada, had requested financial protection in March 2025. Although in mid-May it received a financial boost from Canadian Tire Corporation, the purchase didn't guarantee the continuity of its stores.
In total, 96 locations will disappear, including 80 Hudson's Bay stores, 13 Saks OFF 5TH, and three Saks Fifth Avenue, according to The Street. Liquidations are already underway and will continue until June 15. Starting June 1, no store will operate again. The measure also means the loss of jobs for about 8,000 people, which represents 90% of its workforce.

A Blow for Thousands of Consumers
The disappearance of Hudson's Bay marks the end of an era in retail. For decades, these stores were part of the daily lives of thousands of families. It was common to go there to buy clothing, home goods, and gifts on special occasions.
However, as has already happened with other chains such as Forever 21 or Joann Fabrics, the retail landscape has changed drastically. The competition from online commerce and changes in consumer habits have taken their toll even on the giants. Although the name Hudson's Bay will continue to resonate in history, it will soon disappear from shopping streets.
This wave of closures affects not only Canada, but also customers in the United States who shopped online or traveled to its stores. Now, Hudson's Bay shoppers will have to look for alternatives, and the affected cities will have to reinvent themselves without these historic retail spaces. The final liquidation is imminent, and with it, the end of one of the continent's most recognized brands.
