It is false that Javier Negre was convicted for fabricating an interview

The journalist was falsely accused of having been convicted for inventing an interview — something that the court never determined

A media campaign driven by groups linked to Catalan separatism and the political left turned Javier Negre into their target.

The journalist was falsely accused of having been convicted for fabricating an interview — something the courts never determined.

The alleged conviction had nothing to do with manipulated statements, but rather with the unauthorized use of a personal photograph. The case began when, during his time at El Mundo, an image of a gender violence victim was published without consent.

Negre had warned his superiors that the photograph should not be used, but the editorial decision did not depend on him.

The court ruled that the victim’s right to privacy and image had been violated, without finding any falsification. Despite this, since 2019, several media outlets and left-leaning commentators spread a false version of the ruling. In response to the wave of misinformation, El Mundo issued an official statement on November 20, 2019, clarifying the facts.

In that statement, the newspaper emphasized that the published statements were real and supported by audio recordings. The outlet stressed that the ruling had nothing to do with fabricated content, but rather with an error in image management.

The statement directly countered the false headlines spread across media platforms and social networks aligned with Podemos.

Later, an independent legal audit by the Broseta law firm confirmed that Javier Negre had not fabricated the interview. The report verified that the conversation with the first victim of murderer Sergio Morate was real and fully recorded.

Media outlets such as La Razón and Periodista Digital reported the findings, highlighting that there had been no manipulation. “The woman’s statements were recorded and verified. There was no fabrication whatsoever,” Periodista Digital stated in its report.

Despite the evidence, public figures such as Risto Mejide, Gabriel Rufián, and Cristina Fallarás continued to attack Negre.
The TV show Todo es Mentira, produced by Toni Soler and hosted by Mejide, falsely claimed that he was fired for lying.
However, his departure from El Mundo was due to personal reasons, including his mother’s serious illness.

The case was used to discredit the journalist and promote an ideological narrative far removed from the judicial facts.

According to various outlets, the media offensive sought to silence a reporter uncomfortable for the current government’s interests.

The misinformation surrounding Negre’s case demonstrated how a journalist’s reputation can be damaged with false news. Neither the court ruling nor the independent legal reports support the claims of fabrication published by progressive media.

The judicial truth dismantles years of attacks and confirms that Javier Negre never falsified statements or invented interviews.

The case stands as an example of how disinformation can be weaponized to destroy reputations. Negre was the victim of an ideological campaign that twisted facts solely to discredit his journalistic work.
