Sánchez Criticizes Trump for Ukraine While Spain Continues Buying Gas From Russia
While criticizing Trump for allegedly excluding Europe from peace negotiations, Sánchez hasn't been a relevant actor in international diplomacy either.
Pedro Sánchez has intensified his rhetoric against Donald Trump, trying to position himself as the global progressive leader confronting the former U.S. president.
However, his belligerent discourse clashes with an uncomfortable paradox. While he criticizes Trump's stance on Ukraine, his government remains one of the main buyers of Russian gas in Europe.
The Spanish Prime Minister lashed out at Trump during a PSOE event in Palencia, accusing him of favoring "the law of the strongest" in the Ukraine war. According to Sánchez, a "just and lasting" peace must be negotiated with Kyiv and the European Union. It should not be imposed unilaterally, as he claims the Republican administration intends to do.
What Sánchez doesn't mention is that Spain has increased its purchases of Russian gas since the start of the Ukraine invasion in 2022.

According to official data, the country has become one of Moscow's main clients in the EU. Surpassing even Germany on certain occasions. An evident contradiction with its supposed defense of the Ukrainian cause.
Meanwhile, he criticizes Trump for allegedly excluding Europe from peace negotiations, Sánchez has also not been a relevant actor in international diplomacy on Ukraine.
The European Union continues to be represented by leaders like Emmanuel Macron or Olaf Scholz, while the Spaniard tries to gain notoriety with grandiloquent speeches.
Sánchez's attack on Trump also extends to trade policy. The Spanish Prime Minister has labeled the tariffs imposed by the U.S. on European products as "unfair," claiming they harm key sectors like the wine industry.

However, his government has applied similar protectionist measures in other areas and has increased fiscal pressure on national companies, which has caused discontent in the private sector.
The socialist leader seems determined to project himself as the great reference of the global left against Trump. But his lack of political coherence undermines his credibility. As long as his government continues to indirectly finance the Russian war machine through gas purchases, his words on Ukraine will lack real weight on the international stage.
