Elche's PSOE votes against condemning jihadism
The City Council approved a motion to strengthen security during the Jubilee Year
The Elche City Council held an extraordinary session this Tuesday, called at the request of Mayor Pablo Ruz, with the aim of condemning jihadist terrorism and requesting the Ministry of the Interior to reinforce police forces in light of the Jubilee Year celebration in the city.
The motion, titled "Mayor's Proposal to Condemn Jihadist Terrorism and Demand Increased Security," was approved with the votes in favor from PP, Vox, and Compromís, while PSOE voted against it.
The origin of the call: the case of the detained minors
The initiative to convene this session arose from press reports about the arrest of four minors in Elche last December, accused of planning a possible attack on the Basilica of Santa María.
Initially, the mayor chose not to convene the Security Board in January, after receiving recommendations for caution and being informed that the events were a "childish prank." However, weeks later, new data published by the press revealed more specific details of the alleged terrorist plan, which led the mayor to request information from the Government representatives in the Valencian Community and the province of Alicante.
"Two months have passed and they still haven't contacted me to clarify these facts," lamented the mayor.
Request for a special security plan for the Jubilee Year
During the session, the City Council requested the Ministry of the Interior for a special security plan for Elche on the occasion of the Jubilee Year, a celebration that will attract thousands of visitors and, according to the government team, requires a greater police presence in the city.
PSOE's refusal to support the motion has caused controversy in the session, marking a new disagreement between the municipal government team and the socialist opposition on security matters.
