Netanyahu knocks down the ceasefire agreement with Hamas

Netanyahu accused Hamas on Thursday of trying to modify certain aspects of the agreement at the last minute.

The conflict in the Gaza Strip seems endless. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office accused Hamas on Thursday of attempting to modify certain aspects of the previously negotiated ceasefire agreement at the last minute. This has led the Israeli government to delay its approval and the implementation of the truce, initially scheduled for this Sunday.

Netanyahu's office denounced the following in an official statement:

Hamas is violating parts of the agreement reached with the mediators and Israel, in an effort to obtain last-minute concessions.

The Israeli government also indicated that "the cabinet won't meet until the mediators confirm that Hamas has accepted all the terms of the agreement."

Consequently, the cabinet suspended the meeting scheduled for this Thursday, where the approval of the ceasefire in Gaza was to be discussed and voted on. The truce, which was negotiated after 15 months of conflict and more than 47,700 Palestinians dead, is now on indefinite hold.

The meeting was scheduled for 11:00 local time, with the participation of the government's most right-wing faction. One that had already expressed its opposition to the agreement and its preference for a complete occupation of the Gaza Strip.

Among the most prominent critics are Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, leader of the Religious Zionism party, and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir. Both have threatened to withdraw their support for the executive if the agreement advances.

Despite this opposition, Netanyahu still has majority support within the government to approve the ceasefire. However, its implementation, scheduled for this Sunday, has been suspended indefinitely until disagreements with Hamas are solved.
