Generalitat Demands Tve Rectification for Spreading False Information About Mazón
The General Director of Communication and Institutional Promotion, Francisco Pérez, has denounced RTVE's lack of rigor
The Generalitat Valenciana has announced that it will exercise its right of rectification against RTVE following the broadcast of false information in its regional news on February 26. In that broadcast, the public network claimed that President Carlos Mazón was at CECOPI before the ES-Alert warning was sent on October 29, something the Valencian Government has categorically denied.
The Director General of Communication and Institutional Promotion, Francisco Pérez, has denounced RTVE's lack of rigor and has recalled that the Generalitat has submitted an official report to the court of Catarroja, which demonstrates with documentary evidence that between 5:00 PM and 8:11 PM on that day, Mazón was not at CECOPI. This report is supported by the head of the security cameras at the 112 emergency center in La Eliana, whose images dismantle the information disseminated by the public television.
RTVE's attitude, funded with public money, raises serious doubts about its commitment to informational truthfulness. It is not the first time the network has been questioned for its lack of verification in certain information. In this case, the dissemination of erroneous data without rigorous verification represents a clear detriment to the President of the Generalitat and to the institution itself.
Relying on Organic Law 2/1984, of March 26, regulating the right of rectification, the Generalitat demands that RTVE rectify immediately. Otherwise, the Valencian Government will take legal action to demand accountability, both from the network and from the source that originated the falsehood.
The Consell makes it clear that informational manipulation can't go unpunished and that RTVE has the obligation to practice rigorous journalism, free from biases or distortions that damage citizens' trust in public media.
