The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, announced this Monday that his government is about to finalize a new migration agreement with the United States. It will have a broader impact than the agreements signed in 2019 with Central American countries.

Bukele spoke about the agreement with the following words:

We are finalizing, I think the secretary (of the Department of State) will announce it. We are announcing an agreement that will be much more important, on the same topic, and a much greater scope than those agreements that existed in 2019.

The president referred to the agreements that, at that time, the United States signed with Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador under the administration of Donald Trump. These agreements allowed Washington to deport migrants to these countries if they hadn't applied for asylum previously in the first country of transit. However, only Guatemala effectively implemented the pact.

Nayib Bukele held a meeting with a high-ranking representative of the U.S. Department of State, who is touring Central America after his visit to Panama. The visit aims to reinforce Donald Trump's government's migration policy and strengthen cooperation in security matters.

During a press conference, the U.S. official praised Bukele's management in improving the country's security and stability. He also highlighted that his visit was not only focused on migration issues but also on the attractive investment climate that El Salvador offers.

Both leaders discussed the need to curb irregular migration and combat transnational organized crime, including groups like MS-13 and the Aragua Train. This, according to the official's spokesperson, Tammy Bruce.

Through his account on the social network X, the U.S. representative emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation to strengthen security, stability, and economic development. He also warned about the growing presence of China in the region, noting that it could pose a challenge to the security and economic independence of Central American countries.
