Norway in shock: Prince Sverre, Mette-Marit's son, has just done it
Norway is in shock, Prince Sverre, son of Mette-Marit and Haakon, marks a turning point in the royal family
The Norwegian Royal House has always been a reflection of stability, but even the most traditional monarchies go through moments of transformation. In recent times, the young members of the royal family have started to gain public presence, something that once seemed unthinkable.
Prince Sverre, 19 years old, is the son of Prince Haakon and Mette-Marit. He has been one of the most reserved members of the Norwegian royal family; until now, he had never been assigned a central role within official commitments. However, his recent involvement in institutional events has signaled that his place in the royal family might be changing.

The gesture that marks a change
On June 6, Prince Sverre attended a public event at Oslo's Ullevaal Stadion with King Harald, something that had not happened before. Unlike other occasions, this time the young prince appeared alone with his grandfather at a highly significant institutional event. Both witnessed, as privileged spectators, Norway's victory over Italy in a qualifying match for the 2026 World Cup.
This gesture of accompanying the king at such a meaningful event is a clear symbol of trust and power. As Rupert Bell, a royalty expert, points out, "they were in the VIP area and there didn't seem to be anyone else while they were there." This reflects the growing importance of Prince Sverre, who, until now, had remained on the sidelines of public duties.

A change of course in the royal family
Not long ago, Haakon and Mette-Marit advocated for keeping their son Sverre away from public life. Highlighting their desire to keep his private life, he was compared to Marius Borg, Mette-Marit's brother. He had led a quiet life without the pressures of royalty; however, everything suggests that this perspective is changing.
Prince Sverre has started to take on a more visible role in the Norwegian royal family, even carrying out his first solo event. Several circumstances have influenced this change, such as the departure of his aunt, Princess Marta Luisa, from the institution and the weakening health of Princess Mette-Marit.
A close source points out: "Marta Luisa's departure and Mette-Marit's health have been key factors for the change in focus." This shift in Sverre's role reflects the need to adapt to new realities. It also shows the natural evolution within a monarchy that must adjust to modern times.
