Neither Movistar nor Orange: this operator warns its customers about excessive consumption

There is a company that skyrockets mobile data usage, something that can be somewhat surprising.

An operator that is neither Movistar nor Orange has recently caught attention due to its impressive mobile data consumption. We're talking about Digi. According to data from the National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC), it has managed to have its customers triple the mobile data consumption per customer compared to other operators.

This places the Romanian company in a prominent position as the company with the most intensive internet users outside WiFi networks. According to figures for the third quarter of 2024, the average data consumption per user at Digi rose to more than 16 GB. This is an impressive number when compared to the rest of the operators.

To put this in perspective, Movistar's consumption per customer was 6.4 GB in the same period. Meanwhile, at Vodafone and Orange, the data averaged 3.4 and 3.7 GB respectively. That is, their users consume almost three times more data than those of Movistar, and up to five times more than those of Vodafone and Orange.

Why does Digi have such high data consumption?

There are several reasons why Digi has achieved such high consumption. One of the main ones is the type of customer the company attracts. Digi has gained popularity among users who need to be always connected and who seek plans with a good quality-price ratio.

Many of its customers constantly resort to mobile internet due to the lack of access to quality WiFi networks. But also because of the need to use data more intensively during their daily lives.

Additionally, Digi's plans usually include large amounts of mobile data at a very competitive price. This makes it easier for users to decide to use the internet more outside the home. This contrasts with the strategies of other operators like Movistar or Orange, which tend to offer packages with less data at higher prices.

Movistar and Orange must adapt to customer demands

The fact that Digi has managed to triple its customers' data consumption compared to other operators may be indicative of something. Specifically, of how user habits are changing. We're in an increasingly digitalized country, with intensive use of streaming applications, video calls, and online games.

This phenomenon not only reflects a trend at Digi but also a change in the expectations of telecommunications users. Larger operators like Movistar and Orange need to adapt to offer more data at more competitive prices if they want to maintain their market share.
