Cold Water for Pope Francis and the Vatican: 'I'm Sorry to Say It, but He Should...'

The Holy Father surprised his followers this week with an informal appearance that not everyone liked

Pope Francis surprised the world this week by appearing in public for the first time after being discharged from the hospital without his traditional papal attire. The Pontiff appeared simply, with a cannula to help him breathe and without the usual ornaments. The religious leader went in a wheelchair to a chapel within the Vatican for a moment of private prayer that inevitably became media-focused.

At 88 years old, the image of the Holy Father with a visibly tired face and assisted walking by his collaborators has caused a wave of mixed comments on social media. While many faithful express affection and prayers, others openly question whether it is time for him to resign. "Honestly, it makes me very sad to see the Pope in that state," some write.

Others add that: "The only thing left for me to do is pray for him and that God has mercy on him." Some comments were more critical, questioning both the decision to appear in public and his current ability to lead. "I feel bad saying this, but the Pope should retire now," they assert.

Harsh Comments for Pope Francis

"In these critical times for the world, a Pope with strength and determination is needed, not clinging to ancient customs," they write. Some even considered the outing an "unnecessary spectacle," calling it a "grotesque, egocentric, and ridiculous show." "Couldn't he pray at home? Did he have to go out with that bunch of mafiosos and those looks?" they conclude.

Amid the controversy, voices also suggest that he no longer has full control over decisions within the Vatican. "To me, the Pope no longer makes decisions; he must want to resign, and they won't let him," reads another of the most shared messages. From the Vatican, no statement has been issued on the matter, although they assure that he remains fully conscious and determined to fulfill his duty.

A Still Uncertain Future for the Pontiff

The truth is that these images have opened a new debate about the immediate future of Francis's pontificate and the increasingly discussed possibility of an eventual resignation. Meanwhile, he remains true to his style: approachable, human, and, according to some, too exposed. Be that as it may, his recovery continues, and his ability to move masses does as well.
