Trader Joe's drops the big 'Bombshell' in the U.S. and deals a major blow to Walmart
The city of Merriam is moving forward with a $102 million project that will bring a Trader Joe's and other key commercial facilities
In the world of commercial expansion, few news stories generate as much buzz as the recent opening of a new project in Merriam, Kansas. This small city, which hasn't had a grocery store in years, is about to experience a significant transformation. Trader Joe's, the popular grocery store chain, will be the star of a $102 million project that promises to change the economic and social landscape of the community.
The news has left a deep mark, not only because of the magnitude of the investment, but because it represents a direct blow to Walmart. For years, Merriam hadn't had an operational supermarket since Hen House closed in 2018.

This gap in the market has forced residents to travel to neighboring cities to do their shopping. However, with Trader Joe's arrival, the city will be able to offer a local option to its residents, making a significant difference for the community.
Trader Joe's, the main player in Merriam's revival
The new Trader Joe's supermarket will be a key piece within the Merriam Grand Station Marketplace project. This supermarket will be located on the site of the former county library. With a space of 12,500 sq. ft. (1,161 m²), it will attract a large number of shoppers.
The complex will feature a series of new facilities including apartments and offices. In addition, it will have more than 4,000 sq. ft. (372 m²) of retail space. Restaurants will also be added, which will contribute to the revitalization of the area.
This project aims to revitalize an area that was in decline. The city of Merriam, which is home to more than 10,000 people, has struggled to keep its residents satisfied due to the lack of shopping options.

According to city manager Chris Engel, a supermarket is not just a place to buy food, but a vital meeting point for the community. With this new addition, neighbors will be able to enjoy the convenience of having their own market, something that has been a priority for them.
Project details and its benefits
The Merriam Grand Station Marketplace project, which will occupy six acres (2.4 ha), will also bring improvements to the local infrastructure. With the construction of more than 200 apartments, a Shell service station, and other businesses, this center is shaping up to be a model of urban revitalization in Kansas. In addition, the development is backed by tax incentives and a combination of bonds issued by the city council to cover initial costs.
One of the key decisions of the project is that Trader Joe's will be exempt from a special sales tax. This tax, at 1%, will apply to the rest of the stores in the complex. The tax exemption is a measure to encourage the supermarket's installation.
The special tax will be in effect for 22 years and will raise funds for redevelopment. These funds will also be allocated to tax reimbursements for the city. With the opening scheduled for late 2026, Trader Joe's will mark the beginning of a new era for Merriam.
