The statement from El Mundo denies that Javier Negre fabricated an interview

The newspaper published a statement denying the claims spread by certain media outlets and users

The newspaper El Mundo published a statement denying claims spread by certain media outlets and social media users. They claimed that journalist Javier Negre had fabricated an interview that appeared in the Crónica supplement in February 2016.

In the document, signed by the newspaper's management, the publishing company reaffirms its commitment to truthful reporting. It also explains the reasons behind the correction published on November 10, 2019. This publication, the statement states, was the result of a court ruling and an agreement reached with the plaintiff in the case.

The newspaper specified that the purpose of the correction was solely to protect the identity and rights of the person involved. It also emphasized that it chose not to comment publicly beforehand, "despite the damages suffered," to avoid violating the privacy of the affected party.

In its statement, El Mundo claimed it had "audio evidence of the statements" included in the 2016 interview. This evidence was presented to the court. With this, the newspaper categorically denied the reports that the report was based on fabricated testimony.

The document also emphatically stated that "the journalist, although he could have acted with greater professional rigor, did not fabricate any statements." This clarification, the outlet explained, seeks to dispel any doubts about the veracity of the sources used.

The newspaper also reported that an internal investigation was conducted to review the production process of the report and determine possible responsibilities. In its conclusions, El Mundo acknowledged errors in the production and dissemination of the original piece.

Finally, the newspaper reiterated its commitment to “truthful information, quality journalism, and respect for its readers.”
